Every US holiday is not complete without a visit to the factory outlet. We started our Orlando holiday with outlet shopping after arriving on Saturday evening. It was the Veterans Day Weekend and it was SUPER crowded.
There are two premium outlets in Orlando. One is located along International Drive (nearer to Universal Theme Parks) and the one along Vineland Avenue (nearer to Disney Theme parks. If you have the time to spare, visit both outlets (there are 30 mins drive apart). Although they have similar stores (80% same stores), they do carry different products and sizes.
After visiting both outlets, I definitely recommend the Vineland Avenue if you have to choose one of them. Reasons being, ample parking spots and greater variety. We went to both outlets on the same day. We were at the Outlets @ International Drive for 5 hours and spent less than $100. Disappointed, we decided to go to the Outlets @ Vineland Avenue. We only had 2 hours there but we ended up spending around $500! Even though both outlets have similar stores, somehow, the goods are different.
If you are a shopping queen like my siser but don't want to waste a day at the outlet or drag the entire family (with young children) along, I recommend that you stay near the outlet @ Vineland Ave. Retail hours are from 9 am to 11 pm (Mon-Sat) and 10 am to 9 pm (Sun). Since most of the theme parks are closed by 7 pm, you can still squeeze in 2 hours of personal shopping time after dinner with the family.
Oh yes, one more tip. If you have forgotten to print your VIP coupon, just pick up any discount coupon from your hotel and I am sure you can find a coupon to get the VIP booklet for free (which costs $5). Happy Shopping!

Orlando - Day 1 - Car Rental Nightmare with Dollar Car Rental in Orlando
After my great experience with Payless Car Rental for my Las Vegas Trip, I thought I have "nailed" car rentals for US holidays. Apparently NOT.
Car rentals in Orlando are quite a different ball game from that in Las Vegas. Firstly, it is way more expensive. The cheapest car rental available on my favourite Priceline.ca is at least $30/day. That is before the usual ridiculously high insurance. Instead of following my own advice, ie. reserve BUT don't PREPAY, I caved in and prepaid for car rental on expedia.ca because compact car rental was the cheapest there. HUGE mistake! It was cheapest at C$20.99/day including taxes for a 11 days rental on internet BUT once I PREPAY, I was held RANSOM. The ridiculously high insurance was even much higher than the one they quoted in Las Vegas.
On top of that, the first guy that we spoke with at Dollar Car rental told us that he highly recommended that we get the Sunpass for tolls for a one time cost of US$100 for the entire rental. Reason was that many of the tolls were "hidden" and Dollar would charge an administrative cost of US$15 on top of each fine. I was taken aback since nobody seemed to have brought this up tripadvisor.com or any of the other Orlando site that I checked. I thought it was also quite strange that tolls are hidden. What's up with that? We decided to seriously reconsider if we want to forfeit the C$251.86 that we have already paid for the car rental or pay an additional US$800 for insurance + the sunpass thingy. More than US$1000 for car rental for 11 days? I am pretty sure it would be cheaper to just take a cab. Besides, we don't have to pay for parking at the Theme Parks (which is $15-16/day) if we take a cab.
We decided to have a quick dinner and decide before we leave the airport. My husband asked his friend who was in Orlando just a few days earlier on his car rental and he said he got the rental for Alamo - which was right next to Dollar at the Orlando airport and his rate was $50/day including the sunpass thingy. He also mentioned that ICBC insurance covers car rentals in the US so we only need minimal insurance. We decided to check with Alamo before we decide.
Apparently Alamo was so popular that the staff was just hanging around to go home because they are all sold out for the day. No cars left at all. So, if you are going to rent a car in Orlando, check out Alamo FIRST. We spoke to one of the guys and asked him if it was necessary to get the Sunpass thingy if we are just staying in Orlando and he said NO. There was only one toll on the way out of the airport. It is only $1.25! In fact, throughout our entire 11 days rental, we only paid $2.50 for toll (to and from Airport). PLUS the toll booths are CLEARLY marked and not hidden as described by the Dollar Rental guy. And if you have a GPS, apparently, you can set it to non-toll roads only. So, don't get cheated! I can imagine how cheated we will feel if we have paid US$100 for the sunpass thingy to realize that we only need to pay US$2.50 for the entire trip! What a ripoff!
Since all the cars are sold out at Alamo, we decided that maybe we should give Dollar another try and just stick to the minimum insurance and not get conned into buying anything else. The second person was much nicer than the first and he did not try to sell us the unnecessary stuff but I think we still got ripped off with the basic car insurance. We wanted the bare minimum insurance but we were charged an additional US$351 including taxes for 11 days. We definitely need to check with ICBC if we need to get any insurance at all for US car rental before our next US car rental.
The only consolation is that the second guy gave us a free additional driver and we had a free upgrade from a compact car to an SUV - although we would have preferred a Toyota Corolla instead of a Jeep Liberty since it was a gas guzzler AND it had no tinted windows at the boot so we were not comfortable leaving our shopping in the boot when we went to the factory outlets.

Las Vegas Day 3 - Grand Canyon - 4.5 hours drive from Las Vegas
The main reason we rented the car was to drive to Grand Canyon from Las Vegas. There are many 1-day tours from Las Vegas but they usually start at very early in the morning (6:30 am or earlier) and tend to cramp in too many people in one vehicle and herd people around like sheep. That was why we prefer travelling our own. I treasure my beauty sleep and waking up before 6:30 am, being packed like sardines and herd around like sheep did not sound like a holiday to me at all.
We woke up at a leisurely time of 9 am and set off from the Venetian at 10 am. It was kinda cloudy which was great for driving since it was dry but not super hot. For those who have never driven from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, it IS a long drive. How long? Probably too long for 1 driver, especially for a day trip. Both my husband and I took turns to drive on the way there. There are decent washroom stops along the way so there is really no need to limit your water consumption in the car. Since the weather is dry and hot, I definitely recommend drinking more water. You don't want to get heat stroke before you reach your destination. We stopped made 4 stops on the way there, washroom breaks, snacks, lunch and ice-cream. Probably too many stops since we only made 2 stops on the way back. 3 stops is prob more ideal for the 4.5 hours drive.
We arrived at the Grand Canyon National Park @ 3 pm (5 hours since we left our hotel). If you have GPS and follow the signs, it is pretty straight forward. There is a US$25 charge per car for a 7-day visit.
The Grand Canyon is one of the 7 Natural Wonders in the world, one of Earth's most powerful, inspiring landscapes. Its story tells of geological processes played out over unimaginable time spans as a unique combination of size, colour and dazzling erosional forms.
We certainly took the time to appreciate the beautiful sequence of rock layers that serve as a windows into time. The carving of the canyon is only the most recent chapter, in a long story. The long story includes rocks nearly 2 billion (2,000,000,000) years old in the bottom of the canyon, land masses colliding and drifting apart, mountains forming and eroding away, sea levels rising and falling and relentless forces of moving water. The Colorado River, flowing 2,250 km (1,400 miles) from Colorado to the Gulf of California carved the Grand Canyon 5-6 million years ago. What makes Grand Canyon's geology more remarkable than many canyons is that it sits incised into an elevated plateau. The desert landscape exposes the geology to view instead of hiding it under a cloak of vegetation.
The Grand Canyon National Park is made up of two rims - The South Rim and the North Rim. Both rims are just 10 miles apart if you fly across like a bird but 356 km (215 miles) by road. We went to the South Rim this time since I have been to the North Rim twice with tours. South Rim elevation is 2,100 m (7000 ft) with temperatures between 10-30°C (50s - 80s °F) in Summer and -7 to 10 C (20s - 50s °F) in Winter. The North Rim, 300 m (1000 ft) higher, is about 6°C (10 °F) cooler than the South Rim. The South Rim is open all year. North Rim services are open mid-May to mid-October. Winter snow closes the North Rim and often briefly blankets the South Rim.
There are plenty to do at the Grand Canyon if you are a nature person and would like to experience nature and themselves at the most basic. Many say that in the slow pace, the aloneness and the vastness, they find extraordinary beauty, inner peace, adventure and some times a part of themselves they never even knew existed. This, for many, is the value of wildness. Unfortunately, we only planned a day trip at the Grand Canyon and so we do what city folks do - stay for the sunset. Would have loved stick around for star gazing too.
We did the 25 mile drive from the Grand Canyon Visitor Centre to Desert View and stayed for the sunset @ 7:49 pm. It was an amazing 5 hours spent at the South Rim. The longest time I have spent at the Grand Canyon (I prob spent 2 hours max when I visited the North Rim and it was super crowded).
The sunset was a beautiful conclusion to our Grand Canyon trip. It would have been a wonderful ending if we had booked a hotel in the area for the night. We could even have dinner first and go back and check out the millions of stars since the Grand Canyon protects the dark skies to limit the impact of light and air pollution for star gazing.
Unfortunately, we did not just have to drive another 4.5 hours back to the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas, I had to do it all by myself because my husband forgot to bring his regular glasses (he only brought his sunglasses) and he could not drive at night!!
I managed to get a glimpse of the starry night but since I was the only driver, we did not have the luxury of time to go back to the Grand Canyon and enjoy the stars for the night! So, if you do plan a trip to the Grand Canyon, stay there for the night. I am sure the millions of stars will be so worth while.
Driving 4.5 hours was not the most fun drive but it was definitely one that would go down my history of driving as one of the most unforgettable drive. If you have read my earlier blogs, you would remember that we rented a Toyota Corolla and that the lady at Thrifty was trying to up sell the Mustang Convertible to us. We did not realize how effective the up selling program was until we drove out of Las Vegas that day. We must have seen at least 10 Mustang convertibles for every hour that we were on the road!
It was during my 4.5 hours drive back to Las Vegas that I missed driving a SUV! Most drivers were very considerate and they did not use high beam when they were cars in front or cars approaching except for a few insensitive idiots! However, when a SUV was behind our Toyota Corrolla, even their regular headlights appear like high beam on my mirrors. It was definitely not the most comfortable experience. If you plan to drive for more than 2 hours at night on long trips, rent a SUV. It will make the driving experience so much better.
We finally made it back to the Venetian at 1:30 am. Although it took us nearly 10 hours to drive there and back, it was a wonderful day trip to the Grand Canyon. Will I drive to the Grand Canyon again? Definitely! BUT I would definitely stay for a night there and do the star gazing! Then again, we were happy to be back in the comfort of a 5-star hotel. :)

Las Vegas Day 2 - Factory Outlet Shopping at Las Vegas Premium Outlet North
What is a US Holiday without shopping at the factory outlets?
After a hearty breakfast at Peppermill, we drove less than 10 minutes to our destination of the day - Las Vegas Premium Outlets - North. I have to stress the word NORTH because there are 2 Premium Outlets in Las Vegas. One in the North and the other in the South. We visited the South Premium Outlet on Day 4 and trust me, if you have time for only one, you want to go to the one in the NORTH!
For those who intend to go to the Premium Outlets but are not VIP members yet, get yourself registered (Click this link to register). Once you are a VIP member, do remember to print the VIP coupon and the specific store discount before your trip. Pending on when you are going, there may be special discounts available to VIP members. You can use the VIP coupon to exchange for the VIP coupon book. It usually offers additional discounts on top of existing store discounts. If you forget to print the coupon or if you are not a VIP member, the VIP coupon book is also available for purchase for $5. Still a deal if you purchase more than $100 in participating stores since you generally get an additional 10% discount. While we were there, there was also the MasterCard Promotion and the discounts are even better than those in the VIP coupon book.
Make it a point to visit the Customer Service Center before you start shopping and that short 5 mins trip may save you more than a cup of Starbucks coffee!
There are 150 outlet stores at the Las Vegas Premium Outlet North, so do give yourself plenty of time so that you don't have to rush through the stores. For ladies, I would recommend that you give yourself at least 3 hours. Even then, you will not have time to visit all the stores. I was there for 6 hours and I did not go to all the stores.
My favourite stores at the Las Vegas Premium Outlet North are as follows:

- Addidas
- Asics
- Armani Outlet
- Banana Republic
- Bare Minerals
- Burberry
- Calvin Klein
- Coach
- Guess
- Hugo Boss
- Lancome
- Polo Ralph Lauren
- Juicy Couture
- The Cosmetic Company
- Timberland
- Tumi
- True Religion
- Nike
- Nine West
- Disney Store
- Salvatore Ferragamo
- Sunglass Hut
- Swarovski
- Tag Heuer
- Tommy Hilfiger
I had the most interesting time shopping at the Armani Store. It was the first time that we saw the samples. Samples are one piece clothing that were manufactured and put on mannequins at Armani's corporate headquarter for major retailers to see and feel the product and put down their orders. They are available at 70-80% off their "retail" price. Limited quantities were available and usually one size only (the mannequin size). My husband was really lucky and he bought a leather jacket (incidentally that was also the best purchase for the day) for only US$110! What a steal! It was a pity that I could not find anything suitable for me on the ladies' sample rack. I noticed that most of the samples were made in Italy! Gee!
We (or rather I) shopped for 6 hours. Although we did not buy as much as we thought we would, it was a decent trip with some really good buys. I would definitely recommend the Premium Outlet North to all shoppers!

Las Vegas Day 2: Breakfast @ The Peppermill Restaurant & Fireside Lounge
After an eventful first day in Las Vegas, we decided to check out the Peppermill Restaurant & Fireside Lounge since it had an average 4 star review by 800+ people on Yelp.
It was a building by itself with its own car park. Like all places in Las Vegas, they even had SLOT machines at the Restaurant! The interior decoration was very psychedelic and reminded me of Austin Powers.
Even though the waitress was kind enough to share with us at the point of ordering that the portions were huge and that it was ok to share, we did not heed her advice. True enough, I could not finished my breakfast.

Eggs Benedict - The harsh brown was excellent! Eggs slightly overcooked though |
Can't remember the name. It was good but the portion was too big for me. |
By the time, we left at around 12:30 pm, there was a huge crowd waiting to be seated. Prices were reasonable and food was relatively good. In fact, we went back again on our last day in Vegas and had our dinner there. My husband liked the harsh brown so much that he ordered the Eggs Benedict set again. This place is definitely worth checking out if you have a car.

Las Vegas: Day 1 - Bellagio and its Water Fountain Show
The Bellagio is probably the fanciest 5-star hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. Although I have not seen all the other 5-star hotels, the Bellagio just exude elegance and extravagance. The Venetian is very stylish in its own right but the luxury stores, fancy restaurants and well-heeled guests all made the Bellagio the place to be.
Some popular movies filmed at the Bellagio are
The Fountain show was impressive. It has a new show with different music every 15 mins from 8 pm to midnight. We caught the ending of one and a complete one for the next. The water and lights were impressive but the music was a little too soft from where we were standing so the show did not appear to be as in sync as it should be with the music. For a musical fountain, both my husband and I felt that the Sentosa Musical Fountain in Singapore was more impressive.

Las Vegas Day 1: "O" by Cirque du Soleil @ Bellagio
It was a Saturday night and our first night in Las Vegas. We were not very hopeful that we could get any tickets for "O" by Cirque de Soleil. It was highly recommended by my husband's colleague. We checked out the tickets before we flew into Las Vegas and it was the most expensive of all Cirque de Soleil's performances in Las Vegas. We had two nights to try and catch it as "O" was only available from Wednesdays to Sundays and we were flying home on Wednesday night.
As we walked from the Venetian to Bellagio, we dropped by at Tix4tonight to check if we were lucky enough to get any discounted tickets for "O". Unfortunately, Tix4tonight did not have any tickets for "O" that night.
By the time we walked to Bellagio, it was already 7:10 pm. We went straight to the Cirque du Soleil Box Office at Bellagio and tried our luck. There were tickets! We decided to get 2 tickets @ US$155 each + LET (15.50 tax) since they were pretty good seats for a good discount. Original price for the tickets section 103 (the yellow section) of the lower Orchestra was $180 before tax and usually sold together with the "O" Insider Access VIP experience @ US$260 each.
No worries about getting tickets for "O" on a Saturday night. We were glad we did not book the tickets online with Vegas.com (it had the best deal for our flight and hotel combo). The site was selling tickets for section 204 tickets for US$181.45 each (listed price for the seat on Bellagio's site was $155) + a convenience fee of $21.05! It was better to get your tickets directly from Bellagio than 3rd party sites. Do check that out first before buying from other sources.
We were very happy with our purchase as the seats were very good. We had an excellent view of the stage.
"O" was my first Cirque de Soleil experience while it was my husband's second. If you have not heard about "O", here is a link to the official trailer. According to the official description, "O" pays hommage to the magic of the theatre - from simple street performer to extravagant operas. International-level acrobats, synchronous swimmers, divers and enchanting characters demonstrate their aquatic prowess in, on and above the water resulting in an extraordinary experience. It has been shown at the Bellagio since October 1988.
There were 13 acts during the 1.5 hour show (since no photos are allowed at the show, the following photos are taken with courtesy from Cirque du Soleil's website):
The acts were all executed with perfection (with the exception of Fire - one of the performer dropped the fire stick twice). I was especially fascinated by the stage. It had a pool of water in the middle of the stage that could be adjusted to various depth of water or completely covered for different acts. Because of the pool, "O" was only performed at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.
We had a fantastic time at "O". If you are thinking of a Cirque du Soleil show, I would highly recommend "O".

We had a fantastic time at "O". If you are thinking of a Cirque du Soleil show, I would highly recommend "O".

Las Vegas - Day 1 - the Grand Canal Shoppe
After a fulfilling dinner, we thought we would try our luck and see if we could get the 7:30 pm tickets for "O" by Cirque du Soleil @ Bellagio for the night.
We were somewhere in the middle of the Grand Canal Shoppe after our early dinner and it took quite a while to walk out to the strip. The discovery of the Grand Canal Shoppe was fascinating and definitely worth the time.
We went to Venice before and that made the Grand Canal Shoppe even more interesting as we compared the real Venice to the indoor Venice at the Grand Canal Shoppe. Below are the differences:

We went to Venice before and that made the Grand Canal Shoppe even more interesting as we compared the real Venice to the indoor Venice at the Grand Canal Shoppe. Below are the differences:
- Blue Skies with some fluffy white clouds with no worries of rain or sun. It was really quite pretty and comfortable
- The staff working on the Gondola sang better
- The water in the canal was much cleaner than the one in Venice. No smell or flooding. We were in Venice when it rained and some parts along the canal was flooded.
Can you tell that this is in a shopping mall? |

Check out the Blue Sky and White Clouds! |
Can you that the sky and building behind are just part of the decoration at the Grand Canal Shoppe? |
Of course, they had to include the Venetian Mask to make it look more like Venice! |

Las Vegas Day 1: Italian Dinner @ Tratoria Reggiano - (Grand Canal Shoppe)
By the time, we took a short rest in the suite and changed from our jeans to shorts, we were starving and we were on the prowl for an early dinner (it was only 5 pm!).
We thought we would get something simple at the Grand Canal Shoppe, it was less than 5 mins into walking to the Grand Canal Shoppe when we saw a very quaint looking Italian Street side cafe - Tratoria Reggiano. It was FULL house at 5+! Hmmm... the food ought to be pretty good. I asked one of the ladies sitting at the table and she said the food was good so we decided to have our early dinner there.
The freshly made bread was the highlight of the meal. The pastas were al dente and pretty good in their own right. It was a pity that we were too full after just the bread and the pasta to enjoy any dessert. Prices were pretty reasonable too. I would definitely recommend the Tratoria Reggiano!

Las Vegas - Day 1 Review of the Venetian's Deluxe King Suite and Check-in experience (Resort Fee)
Check-in was fast and smooth even though we prepaid the hotel through Vegas.com, the Venetian staff wanted to charge us an extra $25/day for what they called a resort fee. I was confused since I thought I already prepaid everything. The staff said that no third party would charge us the resort fee. I asked her what is meant by the resort fee. Then she explained that it included access to the hotel wifi and fitness centre. I could understand that payment may be required for wifi access but payment for fitness centre when it is a 5-star hotel? Since we had no plans to visit the fitness centre, we opted out. Contrary to belief, resort fee was NOT compulsory. And the best part is we had intermittent free wifi access from our room. Just picked the wifi for "Suite" instead of the one for "Setup". :)
We booked a Deluxe King Suite with no view (of course, the Venetian asked if we wanted to upgrade to one with view - part of the up sell and cross sell anything you could training all customer service staff seemed to get when you worked in Las Vegas). Even though our suite had no view of the strip, we had a view of the Mirage. Not too bad. The suite was spacious and very well maintained. It even had an ipod docking station. No worries if you forgot to bring your iphone charger.
The room even had a remote control for the curtains (both the night curtain and the day venetian blinds!). Even though it was not a new hotel, everything was well maintained and clean. The only downside were the size of the TVs. There were three TVs in the room, one in the bathroom, one in front of the bed and one in the living area. The 32" LCD TVs were just too dated in a 5-star hotel these days.
On the whole, a fantastic and comfortable suite for the promotional price of US$149/night from Sunday to Wednesday! (Saturday night was US$229/night but still quite worth it!)
